Aussie Startup Brings Seamless Computing Across Devices

These days, accessing the same files across multiple devices can be a feat. Services like Dropbox can help transfer files from one device to another, but it’s not the most elegant solution.
We’re moving toward a world in which you can swipe, flick and tap to share data from one piece of hardware to another, effortlessly. [...]

Sprint bumps early termination fee to $350, wants to play with the big boys

Never count the little guy out. It seems Sprint's ramping up its game in preparation for the possible three-way carrier brawl lurking just out of view. The Hesse-led company revealed a coming change to its ETF for customers with smartphones, tabs, laptops and netbooks. Beginning September 9th, Sprint will charge a $350 termination fee -- the same as Verizon and AT&T -- that will be pro-rated depended on the number of months left on a subscriber's contract. The charge is a hefty step-up from its prior fee of $200, clearly signaling to the marketplace that it demands to be seen as a contender.

Index To Lead ?10 Million-Plus Round In European Square Competitor iZettle

iZettleIndex Ventures is on a roll. The company is leading Dropbox's $4 billion valuation round, and today, we've heard that the fund is making a major investment in Europe's Square competitor iZettle. We've confirmed the funding with a source close to the company. We've also heard from a source the round is 10 million Euros ($14 million) plus. iZettle, which is based in Sweden, launched earlier this year as a card reader that allows users to take credit card payments from chip-enabled credit or debit cards. The free device plugs into the iPhone's port, and you download companion app from App Store and sign up for an iZettle account.

Firefox for Honeycomb UI shown off, inching closer to a tablet near you

Firefox on Honeycomb
The Mozilla team has been quietly toiling to bring Firefox to a mid-sized screen near you. It's already a perpetual favorite on the desktop and has made a bit of a splash on Android phones, now the group has Honeycomb tablets squarely in its crosshairs. It's still very much in the early stages of development but a few UI decisions have been made, including the choice to adhere pretty strictly to Android 3.0's minimalist appearance. In landscape mode tabs will be represented as a persistent thumbnail bar on the left, but in portrait they'll revert to the top with a more familiar appearance. The tabbed Awesome from the mobile version also returns. Check out the gallery below, as well as the source for more detail and more mockups.

Google Voice Search learns Latin American Spanish, Indonesian, and Malaysian

google voice search
Google Voice Search has just introduced localizations for Latin America, Indonesia and Malaysia, enabling native language search for hundreds of millions of users.

Google's official blog post offers some interesting insights into the process of collecting and analyzing the speech data needed to expand support. Thousands of hours were spent gathering voice samples and choosing key regional accents to analyze, and International Program Manager Linne Ha is clearly very appreciative of the Google users who helped the company complete the expansion. Without an enthusiastic base of users to lend a hand, Google Voice Search's polyglot powers would have been nearly impossible to deliver.

HTML5 MP3 player lets you listen to your music library inside your browser

html5 browser mp3 audio player
While this slick little HTML5 audio player might not pack all of the features of your favorite desktop media application, it's still a very cool demonstration of what a Web app can do with access to local resources -- like MP3 and OGG files.

Just fire up http://antimatter15.github.com/player/player.html in your HTML5-compatible browser and browse to the topmost folder in your music library. The app will quickly build an index of all your tunes and let you start listening right inside your Web browser. Click on the filter library text, and you can enter a search string -- results load as you type.

There's a volume control, shuffle mode, play/pause control, and you can click and drag to skip forward or rewind during playback. As OMG! Ubuntu points out, you can even save the app to your hard drive and run it offline, which is pretty darn cool.

Not all browsers are equal when it comes to HTML5 implementation, of course. We found that Chrome worked the best, and Firefox was OK. It's also worth noting that this music player comes from the same developer that created one of our favorite restartless Firefox 4 add-ons, drag2up.

World's only turbine-powered Batmobile up for sale on eBay, recession hits Bruce Wayne, too

Remember that Boeing-powered Batmobile we ran across last month? Well friends, it could be yours via eBay auction in about a week. Currently, the highest bid is you can buy it now for $620,000 -- which would be enough to cover the cost of several cars not fit for the Caped Crusader. However, none of those come equipped with a helicopter turbine, now do they? Putsch Racing reminds interested parties that the mean machine is street registered in the US, so you can roll like the Dark Knight without fear of the police pursuing you. An iPad loaded with digital avionics helps you monitor the jet engine, and you can use your choice of three fuel sources to power the thing: Jet A, kerosene, or diesel. Hey now, we never said it was environmentally friendly. If you, like Jay-Z, are "planking on a million," check out the detailed auction shots below and bid on Batman's ride yourself.

Android Wallpaper Review: Galactic Core Live Wallpaper

 Galactic Core Live Wallpaper

I remember when live wallpapers came out on Android. Everyone was freaking out about how cool they looked, and people were either elated their phone had the specs to run them or were crestfallen because their phone didn't. One of Google's built-in wallpapers was a galaxy. People thought it was awesome and it was used in a lot of demo videos.

Quite simply, this wallpaper puts Google's to shame. Galactic Core Live Wallpaper is easily the most stunning galaxy live wallpaper I've seen, if not the best and most gorgeous live wallpaper I've seen at all. It's bright, brilliant, and runs like a champ.

Using touch alone, you can move the galaxy up and down, giving you different angles to gaze. There's no multitouch for zooming, which is a little disappointing, if not expected. I'm not sure anyone incorporates that into their wallpapers, but it would have been a killer touch.

If you've opted for the paid version (and you should), there's an awesome settings menu waiting for you to tweak things. Galaxy zoom, rotation speed, and rotation direction are all there. You can also change the camera speed (for when you're changing the angle) and uncap the framerate, if you're using a device that'll churn higher than 60 fps.

The best part of the settings menu is the color section, that allows you to determine what the three colors in your galaxy will be. It's all slider-based, which isn't great for accuracy, but with enough toying, you'll get the shades you want. You can end up making some pretty bizarre (and beautiful) galaxies using less-traditional colors, so spend a few minutes with it. You'll be glad you did.

The Galactic Core Live Wallpaper has a free version, but if you want to access the plethora of settings available to you, I'd opt for the donate version, which is a cheap 99 cents. If you're not quite convinced, we've got download links and more screenshots after the break.

Boomshine is a soothing-yet-frustrating time waster

boomshine
One click; just one single well-aimed click. That's all you get in Boomshine.

That single click triggers a chain reaction; circles start exploding, and other circles colliding with the shockwaves explode as well, creating their own shockwaves, which then catch other circles.

It's been done before, yes, but this one is a great iteration. The soundtrack is mellow, with lots of piano and some nice percussion (not electronic - it sounds like drums).

At each level you need to make a certain number of circles explode to go on to the next level. I got up to level 12, where you get 60 circles and need to make 55 of them explode. And then I kept trying and trying, but simply couldn't get it. I did get to 54 circles a couple of times, but as they say, you don't get points for trying.

There's no time limit, so you can carefully study the pattern of motion and place your click at the exact right place to create the best chain reaction. I've found that clicking near the middle of the screen works quite well, especially if the balls are slowly moving in that direction. By the time the first shockwave dies off, the oncoming balls usually hit it and the chain reaction continues.

What level did you reach? Screenshots please!
