A widely held view in the security community is that currently available security technology just can't cope with the new types of attacks being launched on IT infrastructures. Some security vendors, in fact, have acknowledged their inability to fight advanced persistent threats and are calling for new approaches to fighting hackers.

(Founder Stories) How Thrillist?s Ben Lerer Got Thicker Skin And Grew Up
In this episode of Founder Stories with host Chris Dixon, Thrillist co-founder Ben Lerer discusses the challenges of running a growing business (watch his first interview here). Lerer says of primary importance is keeping the team focused on turning readers into shoppers and shoppers into readers: "We are not just Thrillist ... we have this other thing called JackThreads and this other thing called Rewards and ... we are one company, we are moving in one direction."�Lerer also recognzies that the carefree days of being an early stage start-up are history and points out "we have real numbers to hit." Trying to maintain sanity though the roller coaster isn't easy he says. "We [co-founder Adam Rich] were very fragile for a long time and I think that has been one of the biggest challenges for us is to just sort of like get thicker skin and grow up."

Gig U Hopes to Seed Development With Ultra-Speedy Campus Networks
Twenty-nine U.S. universities are hoping that Gig U, a project that brings ultra-high-speed Internet access to campuses and the surrounding areas, can spur economic growth and research development to their communities. The initiative will arm universities and neighboring hubs with Internet speeds up to 1 Gbps, enough to download a full-length HD movie in seconds.
ASUS Eee Slider update: 32GB model in September, 3G edition in 2012
You know, it wouldn't even bother us if it didn't look so amazing. But alas, the Eee Slider from ASUS is easily one of the most anticipated Honeycomb tablets around, and our unending love for the since-departed HTC Advantage ensures that the flame for this guy will keep burning, too. Just a few weeks after hearing from ASUS' UK branch that the Slider was being delayed until 'autumn,' in flies word from The Netherlands that we may be able to fix our gaze on September. Based on reports from Tablets Magazine, the 16GB model will be canned altogether in favor of a lone 32 gigger, which should sell for €499 across the pond. As for the 3G-enabled variant? We aren't apt to see that surface until Q1 2012. It's tough to pinpoint the reason for the holdup, but our guess is software -- earlier in the week, a hands-on video emerged showcasing the Slider with Android 3.1, paying particular attention to the newfound USB accessory support. Have a gander at the video just past the break, and feel free to console one another in comments.Update: Seems that ASUS' Polish arm thinks that the 16GB model may ship in that corner of the world. Hmm... maybe these folks should start talking to one another.

Windows 8 Explorer to feature Ribbon UI, SkyDrive and Mesh integration?
The Ribbon, like in Microsoft Word and Excel, is context-aware, adding tabs for specific tasks which apply to the folder you're viewing -- such as library or picture management. You can also make out two new buttons in the status bar, which allow you to change the current folder's view style.
It's clear from all the placeholder images and repeated elements that this is very much a work in progress, but featuring the Ribbon more prominently in Windows 8 would certainly be a logical progression for Microsoft. It's slowly become more ubiquitous, moving beyond Office and into Wordpad, Paint, and several of the Windows Live Essentials applications.
There's more to the screenshots than the Ribbon UI, however. Our friend Long Zheng has noted two interesting elements in the images: Web sharing and sync (image after the break). That would likely mean users will be able to quickly upload files to SkyDrive and synchronize using Live Mesh right from Explorer in Windows 8. That's not a total surprise considering many of the earliest leaked images of Windows 8 showed Windows Live integration on the desktop.
